MLSO K-Cor Automated CME Catalog

Model Description

The MLSO K-coronagraph (K-Cor) automated CME detection catalog is comprised of output from the CME detection algorithm by W. Thompson et al. 2017, which is based on the SEEDS CME detection algorithm. The algorithm is part of the near real time K-Cor processing pipeline that ingests near real time K-Cor pB images, and creates running differences to detect features moving outward through the corona. This automated pipeline generates CME detection alerts with basic CME properties such as position and speed.

The Mauna Loa Solar Observatory (MLSO) is located at an elevation of 3353m on National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration property situated on a lava field on the northwest flank of Mauna Loa on the island of Hawaii. MLSO is administered by the High Altitude Observatory of the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado.

The COronal Solar Magnetism Observatory (COSMO) K-coronagraph (K-Cor) is one of three proposed instruments in the COSMO facility suite. It is specifically designed to study the formation and dynamics of coronal mass ejections and the evolution of the density structure of the low corona. The K-Cor records the polarization brightness (pB) formed by Thomson scattering of photospheric light by coronal free electrons. The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), via the National Science Foundation (NSF), provided full funding for the COSMO K-Cor, which was deployed to the Mauna Loa Solar Observatory (MLSO) in Hawaii in September 2013, replacing the aging MLSO Mk4 K-coronameter.

Model Outputs Description

CME detection alerts with basic CME properties such as position angle, speed, and height. The automated CME detection catalog is provided in JSON format for the CCMC SEP Scoreboard, which also includes human observer CME alerts, and heartbeat alerts to indicate that the observatory is currently taking data.

Model Caveats

This CME list is automatically generated. The detection algorithm is not perfect so there are sometimes false detections. Additionally, the signal to noise in the data varies with sky conditions which impacts the quality of detections. The observers will issue retractions for most false detections. We ask you to use caution when using the data for statistical purposes.
