Weigel-DeltaB (2012-03-05)Weigel Ground magnetic perturbation modelModel DescriptionThe statistical model calculates magnetic perturbations on the ground (north, east and down components) (and the change of horizontal components dB/dt=sqrt( [d(DeltaB_north)/dt]^2 + [d(DeltaB_East)/dt]^2 ) ) at the location of selected magnetometer stations. The model uses solar wind data from ACE or WIND. Model Figure(s) :Model Inputs DescriptionInput parameters include the solar wind plasma number density N, velocity V_x (along Sun-Earth line), the transverse orientation of the solar wind magnetic field B_y, B_z (in GSM coordinates), and the orientation of the Earth's magnetic axis at the time of interest. These parameters are used to set up the model for the desired conditions, after which the only needed input parameters are the geomagnetic latitude and magnetic local time (MLT), in AACGM (Altitude Adjusted Corrected Geomagnetic) coordinates. Model Outputs DescriptionThe output from the model consists of the magnetic perturbations, in nT, at a selected set of magnetometer locations on the ground. Magnetic perturbations as returned by the model are the differences on a 1-minute time scale from the background magnetic field of the Earth. Model CaveatsThe model comes in two flavors, one returning the DeltaB values the other change rate of the horizontal component (in nT/s). Change LogThis version is the last of several that were delivered to the CCMC to participate in the SWPC-2011 modeling challenge to select a model for eventual operations at the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC).
